The Environmental Performance Index is a joint project of Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network at Columbia University. The researchers defined 20 indicators reflecting national-level environmental data to assess the “quality” of the environment in countries where sufficient statistical data were available.
The indicators were, among others:
- Quality of air and water
- Climate & Energy
- Biome protection
- Use of pesticides in agriculture
- Sustainability of fishing (…)
The indicators were weighted to provide a single score between 0 and 100, where 0 is a complete environmental disaster and 100 is the best state of the environment currently possible. The following map shows the resulting score for European countries. For the full list of countries see this page.
